TV ratings: ITV's World Cup audience surge rolls on

ITV's successful World Cup ratings-wise rolled on last night, Monday 21 June, with live coverage of Spain v Honduras attracting just over 7 million viewers on ITV1 and ITV1 HD. Live coverage of Spain's 2-0 win averaged 6.586 million (30.3%) on ITV1, with a further 441,000 (2%) for the ITV1 HD simulcast, over two hours from 7.30pm. This was the most watched show on any channel yesterday. Full coverage, including and pre- and post-match comment and analysis, had 5.954 million (28.2%) on ITV1 and 384,000 (1.8%) on ITV1 HD between 7pm and 9.30pm. James Corden's World Cup Live followed up from 9.30pm with 3.085 million (13.6%) on ITV1 and 189,000 (0.9%) on ITV1 HD. A further 415,000 (2%) watched as the show continued for another half hour on ITV4 from 10pm. ITV4 was 168% up on its average audience share in the slot over the past three months – the best performance by any multichannel show on this comparision yesterday. Earlier in the day, live coverage of Roger Federer flirting with a first-round exit on the opening day of Wimbledon 2010 made BBC2 the most watched channel for 90 minutes from 2.30pm, just ahead of BBC1's live World Cup coverage of Chile v Switzerland. Viewing of Wimbledon 2010 began to take off from about 2.15pm, as BBC1's live coverage of Portugal's 7-0 whupping of North Korea (12.15pm-2.40pm: BBC1 1.903 million/28.9%, BBC HD 135,000/2%) came to an end and Federer lost the second set to Alejandro Falla. In the 90 minutes from 2.30pm BBC2 was the most watched channel, averaging 1.841 million (25.1%) during that period. Chile's 1-0 win over Switzerland averaged 1.97 million (23%) on BBC1 and 139,000 (1.6%) on BBC HD between 2.45pm and 5.10pm. Overall, BBC2's Wimbledon 2010 live coverage averaged 1.339 million (12.8%) between midday and 8pm. A further 54,000 (0.3%) watched the BBC HD simulcast between 5.10pm and 8pm. Viewers looking to escape live football yesterday evening appear to have turned to ITV3's drama repeats, with Agatha Christie's Marple (7pm: 543,000/2.6%) and Lewis (9pm: 899,000/4.3%). The Lewis repeat was the second most watched multichannel show of the day, after BBC3's EastEnders repeat (10pm: 1.014 million/5.4%). It was also 132% up on ITV3's three-month average audience share in the slot - the second best multichannel performer by this comparison yesterday. Big Brother held its own in its 10pm slot for Channel 4 (2.089 million/11.8%, C4 +1 180,000/2%), second only to BBC1's 10pm news (4.443 million/21.3%).
