Crack Hungarian sprinter Overdose stretches unbeaten run to 13
The crack Hungarian sprinter Overdose stretched his unbeaten record to 13 yesterday at the Slovakia Derby meeting, achieving an easy victory under his new jockey, the one-time British-based rider Gary Hind. Overdose, known as the Budapest Bullet, was returning from a 15-month lay-off due to injury and while his success at Listed race level would have been expected, there must be high hopes that he can continue where he left off. April 2009 was the last time the winner was on a racecourse and he will surely add spice to the remainder of the season, with the Prix de l'Abbaye on Arc day in October at Longchamp an obvious target and one connections would dearly love to win, having triumphed there with the horse in 2008 before the race was declared void owing to a false start. Godolphin may have suffered a reverse with the Saeed Bin Suroor-trained Hibaayeb, who floundered on the wet ground after being sent off favourite for the Irish Oaks , but they were successful in the German Derby, where Mahmood al-Zarooni sent the 12-1 shot Buzzword out to win in Hamburg. First-season trainer al-Zarooni was following up his success in the German 2,000 Guineas in May with Frozen Power while Buzzword is now an old hand in the Classic division, having already finished 14th behind Makfi in the 2,000 Guineas before his fourth in the French version and an eighth-place finish in the Derby at Epsom. Royston Ffrench, who rode Buzzword clear in the final furlong, said: "My main concern was to get a decent position with such a big field. Once I'd managed that, the horse did the rest." Godolphin's Diana Cooper said: "Buzzword had a lovely draw in seven and Royston made best use of it. Buzzword was always up with the pace and he showed the turn of foot that he has to good effect. "He has run consistently well throughout his career and it is great that he has now won at the top level," she told www.godolphin.com. The big disappointment was Mark Johnston's Monterosso, the well-beaten 9-4 favourite, who had yesterday's winner back in third in the King Edward VII Stakes when winning at Royal Ascot.
