Pendulum: Immersion

It's business as usual on the purist-riling Aussies' third album; their drum'n'bass/rock hybrid absorbs new flavours but remains as populist as ever. "Salt In The Wounds" builds and drops with shameless predictability, "The Vulture" combines metal with cheesy package holiday house. This combination of brazen commercialism and sonic heft might be refreshing except that they take themselves so seriously. Pompous instrumental opener "Genesis" sets the tone and when the Prodigy's Liam Howlett crops up on "Immunize", you wish instead for the cartoonish presence of Keith Flint to lighten the mood.
