Observer columnist Andrew Rawnsley says the timing of the challenge could hardly have been worse for Labour or for the plotters. As the cold snap continues to cause problems on Britain's roads, Steven Morris visits a gritting depot in Gloucestershire to meet the people responsible for keeping motorists moving. Art critic Jonathan Jones assesses the merits of Nicky Phillips' new portrayal of princes William and Harry, unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery.
