Championship Verdict: The Observer fans' network on Saturday's matches

Bristol City 0-4 Middlesbrough Was it a good match? The first half was extremely even, but Boro got better as the game went on. The own goal just before half time knocked us back and we were an absolute shambles in the second half. The visitors continued to grow in confidence and looked a decent side. They have players with Premier League experience and it showed. The scoreline doesn't lie and they deserved their win. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Barry Robson was impressive and scored a brilliant goal. Kalifa Cissé was absolutely appalling. Albert Adomah and Marvin Elliott did OK, but no one played at the level you'd expect. Graham Clapp, OTIB.co.uk Burnley 0-0 QPR Was it a good match? It was an intriguing and at times scrappy game with very few goalscoring opportunities at either end. QPR dominated – we didn't get a kick for the opening half an hour. Both defences were on top and neither keeper had much to do. It was pleasing to restrict them to few opportunities, though. The visitors are a strong side with very good Championship players – not the prettiest side but they are effective. They look like a team on their way up. Who played well/who had a nightmare? The good performances were at the back. Michael Duff and Danny Fox were my picks. Tony Scholes, ClaretsMad.co.uk Coventry City 0-0 Sheffield United Was it a good match? One of the best nil-nils I've seen. For an Aidy Boothroyd team used to playing quite direct stuff we played elegant, free-flowing football. We had 14 corners in the first half alone. We're delighted with the performance and just frustrated not to have scored the goal. Sheffield United are obviously struggling defensively and set out their stall to be brutal in their approach – but they got their point. The ref didn't have control of the game and let them get away with fouls which would have seen them get red cards on another day. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Carl Baker – good old fashioned wing play. Richard Owen, Observer reader Doncaster Rovers 0-3 Reading Was it a good match? We had a bad day at the office against one of our bogey teams. The game turned on two mistakes from our goalkeeper. We matched Reading for the first half an hour until they punted a long ball upfield – our keeper, caught in two minds, should have come off the line instead of being routed to the spot. He then came for a ball he had no chance of getting in the second half only to see Jimmy Kébé lob the ball into an open net. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Neil Sullivan had a nightmare in goal. Kébé had a good game for Reading and gave us the runaround all afternoon. Chris Rumley, Observer reader Hull City 2-0 Barnsley Was it a good match? It was a poor game devoid of real quality – for the most part it was scrappy. Barnsley had the better of the opening exchanges but Hull started to get back into the game after 15 minutes. The visitors had to be wary of the attacking threat of Aaron McLean, Matty Fryatt and Robert Koren. But it took a long time to break them down. I don't think there was much danger of letting the lead slip after they were reduced to 10 men. Who played well/who had a nightmare? James Chester had a good debut at centre-half – he was very solid, showed good positioning and was impressive in the air for his size. Rick Skelton, HullCityOnline.com Leeds United 4-0 Scunthorpe United Was it a good match? I thought we played quite well and need not have worried about letting ourselves down after impressing against Arsenal in the Cup. Leeds took their foot off in the second half, but it was a convincing win. Scunthorpe tried to play football but just didn't turn up. The only player to trouble us was Jonathan Forte, who came on during the second half. We didn't punish them as much as we should have. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Max Gradel, Sanchez Watt and Robert Snodgrass were outstanding. Luciano Becchio looked like he was carrying a knock. Adam Ternent, motforum.com Millwall 2-1 Ipswich Town Was it a good match? I thought we were unfortunate to go 0-1 down and played well throughout, It wasn't so much that we created an abundance of chances, but we deserved to win after playing some great football and, considering we had some significant injuries, it made the result even more impressive. I was particularly pleased to have beaten Ipswich, who never really looked out of the game. They look like they've got some work to do under the new manager, but they're certainly not a rugby team as Cesc Fábregas suggested. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Neil Harris showed he still has a lot to offer. Charlie Mahoney, Observer reader Norwich City 1-1 Cardiff City Was it a good match? Norwich started the game slowly but responded well. We had most of the ball in the first half but couldn't translate chances into goals. We lacked a cutting edge, too. Norwich had a penalty appeal turned down, and, while we were disappointed to go in at the break 0-1 down we were optimistic. Cardiff looked dangerous on the counter after the break but we still saw most of the ball. We tried to over complicate play at times but scored a last minute equaliser. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Wes Hoolahan was an integral part of our team. Rachel Neil, NorwichCity.FootballUnited.com Nottingham Forest 2-1 Portsmouth Was it a good match? For long spells it looked like we were going to lose our unbeaten home record. Portsmouth took advantage of a slip in defence and Kanu scored with a cool finish. But Billy Davies got the subs spot on and turned the game in our favour. We lacked our usual rhythm but our endeavour got us there in the end. The crowd was flat but the relief at the equaliser said it all. When the winner went in, it was chaos. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Guy Moussi was the driving force for the second-half improvement and Marcus Tudgay's all-action display merited the winning goal. Jamie Ashdown didn't deserve to be on the losing side. Simon Hough, Observer reader Preston North End 1-1 Leicester City Was it a good match? It was a good game. Phil Brown has instilled some discipline and belief, more than I saw under Darren Ferguson in 18 months. Leicester will be disappointed not to come away with three points but they'll be up there without a doubt. The ref and the linesmen spoilt it a bit. They made it bitty and got the crowd riled up. If we go down, it won't be without a fight. Who played well/who had a nightmare? The new lad Amine Linganzi was a real Rolls Royce player. He was missed in the second half. Yakubu doesn't do a great deal but scored. Feed the Yak and he will score, as they say. Mark Holt, Observer reader Swansea City 3-0 Crystal Palace Was it a good match? We were up against a poor Palace side and they didn't pose a threat. Swans dominated possession, got the goal at the end of the first half and that set them on the way. The ref didn't have to do a lot apart from the penalty decisions. First one is a definite pen. The second was a harsh handball but Palace can't have any complaints. There's a long way to go but no reason why we can't keep up this form. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer get behind defences and punish teams and, with Darren Pratley, they were the threats. Kevin Elphick, Swansea.VitalFootball.co.uk Watford 3-0 Derby County Was it a good match? We've won six league games on the bounce and I can't stop smiling. The first half didn't really start until the first goal went in and the following two made the second a bit of a non-event. I don't recall Watford ever playing with so much confidence. We found out Danny Graham is the first Watford player since 1929 to score in six consecutive league games so a bit of history is always nice. Who played well/who had a nightmare? Adrian Mariappa was solid and Kris Commons was their one player who was trying to make a mark. Piero Mingoia came on late on and terrorised them. Matt Churchill, Fan6927.wordpress.com
