Elusive Pimpernel has a chance to raise his Classic profile
The Classic credentials of Elusive Pimpernel, one of the few horses seen as a potential challenger to the brilliant St Nicholas Abbey, will be tested in Thursday's Craven Stakes at Newmarket. John Dunlop's colt is one of nine runners left in the race after today's final entry stage and is likely to start favourite. "He's been problem-free over the winter," said Dunlop. "He was a very big two-year-old but he's filled out and matured. He's done extremely well. I'm very pleased with his physical development." Elusive Pimpernel was last seen finishing a four-length second to St Nicholas Abbey in the Racing Post Trophy in October. Dancing David and Morana, who finished fourth and fifth that day, will also be in Thursday's line-up. "I can't see any reason why he shouldn't confirm the form," said Dunlop. "I hope he'd come for the run but he's done lots of work. Eddie Ahern, his regular rider, is sadly suspended on Thursday. Ryan [Moore] hasn't sat on him but he's a brilliant jockey and I'm sure he'll do well." Elusive Pimpernel is 20-1 for both the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby. St Nicholas Abbey, favourite for both Classics, was described as being in "great form" by Aidan O'Brien on his website today. Racegoers at Newmarket tomorrow can hope to pick up some Classic clues in addition to the scheduled action on the course. Awzaan, a 10-1 shot for the 2,000 Guineas, will work on the Rowley Mile after the third race, while the 1,000 Guineas contender Tabassum is to gallop before racing at 12.45pm.
