Wines of the week

Quinta da Giesta, Dão DOC, Portugal 2009 (£7.49, laithwaites.co.uk ) Wine Relief, the vinous wing of Comic Relief, is in action again, with a number of retailers handing over 10% of the bottle price on a handful of wines. This year's offer, which lasts until 18 March, features some excellent wines, including each of this week's trio. First up is a Portuguese red of real character, where fragrantly floral and juicily fruity flavours are backed up with some smoky oak and chunky tannins. Château de Pizay Morgon, Beaujolais, France 2009 (£8.99, majestic.co.uk )) A joyously vivid, explosively red-and-black-fruited example of the outstanding 2009 vintage in Beaujolais, this is a world away from your common-or-garden nouveau. It's not just about the fruit either: there's some gentle but savoury tannins there to give it enough grip, and a bit of body too. Charming stuff. Villiera Barrel-Fermented Chenin Blanc, Stellenbosch, South Africa 2009 (£10.49, marksandspencer.com ) Beautiful Stellenbosch is the historic heart of South African wine, but this is a great example of how good modern South African whites can be. It's quite forceful on the nose – a bit like opening the oven to find a freshly baked apple pie. The palate is honeyed, and the acidity scintillating. Delicious.
