Courtney Love addresses Oxford Union

The great comeback of the band that is and is not Hole failed to happen on Thursday, after a riot prevented Courtney Love from reaching their first gig in London. Hole debuted instead on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross, with Love speaking at Oxford Union the next day. Love was due to arrive at Camden's Proud Galleries around midnight on Thursday, with nearly 1,000 fans packed into the Smash and Grab club night. Across town, thousands of other party-seekers mobbed a squat on Brick Lane , drinking, dancing and making a fumbling gesture "against the banks". Love, staying nearby, was trapped. At 12:40 am, Smash and Grab promoter Mairead Nash announced that the singer would arrive shortly: she was merely "stuck". But within half an hour, it was clear Love would be a no-show. "There was as youllread tomorrow in the LOndon papers a MASSIVE riot tonight putside my house," she wrote on Twitter . "The cops wouldsnt let me leave." Luckily for Love, no one was rioting at Oxford University on Saturday, not even fans of Eric Erlandson and Melissa Auf der Maur . Love addressed the Oxford Union, discussing drugs ("after 40 it's just ugly"), celebrity ("I don't have it quite right") and the impact of YouTube videos about physics on her music ("quantum physics has done my band a world of good"). She also spoke about her late husband, Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, and the impact of his suicide. "[People say] 'God, Kurt was cool,'" she said. "No, he wasn't." "Not in the sense of [his suicide]. That action had a horrible effect on our family. It's not cool. It just wasn't cool. And that action was regretted the second it happened. I was expected by the zeitgeist to go with him or something. But I worked. I had to work to get money to feed my kid." Love has struggled recently with her daughter, Frances Bean. She lost legal guardianship of the 17-year-old in December , and a restraining order filed by Frances has been extended into April, according to TMZ. "What gave me strength was my daughter's life force," Love told Oxford Union. "My daughter's the most important thing to me." This was a more balanced attitude than Love displayed on Twitter earlier that day, reacting to developments in the legal battle for her daughter. "I've never said this before ever, today fuck all month Kurt is ROLLING in his grave, vomiting and screaming. WHAT THE FUCK KID?" she wrote . "THINK HELLFIRE DAMNATION, THINK PICKING UP PICKUP TRUCKS WITH ONE HAND, THINK FROZEN EARTHTHINK BLINDING ICE STORMS GENE ... THINK barristers and the nastiest dirtiest meanest rednecked and proud of it hardworking evil nasty genius burah ffuckers on earth RUN." The same things might have been on her mind the previous night, performing with Hole on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross. The band played a new song, Samantha . Love may soon be moving to England, she told the Oxford Union. "This is where I want to live, either Oxfordshire or Buckinghamshire ... The first time I came to Oxford I was with Echo and the Bunnymen and I walked around, and the bricks were so black and it was so magical." Hole's first official concert will take place at Shepherd's Bush Empire on Wednesday (17 February).
