Ondine

Director Neil Jordan puts a high gloss on this sentimental tale from Ireland. Colin Farrell plays Syracuse, a lonely fisherman who, to his astonishment, one day finds a naked woman in his catch. Played by Alicja Bachleda, she is apparently a "selkie", a mythical creature from the seas, whose singing charms the fishes into his nets. Syracuse falls in love with her, but this relationship causes no end of problems. You'll need a soft spot for this kind of whimsy, and mine sadly is like reinforced concrete – though there are nice performances from Farrell, and a supporting cast including Dervla Kirwan, Tony Curran and Stephen Rea.
