Today in Sport - as it happened
8am: Good morning and welcome to our daily sports news blog. Throughout the day we'll update this page with news, links and what's expected to happen in the hours ahead. Time permitting, we'll try to wade in below the line, answering your questions and comments. TL 9.20am: Just a quick link for your morning reading/viewing: this week's Classic YouTube , featuring Winter Games wonders, lazy horses and an 80-yard screamer. JD 10.14am: This could be a saga that runs and runs - Lalit Modi has hit back in the row over the timing of the Twenty20 Champions League. JA 10.16am: In Football Weekly today, the midweek action, the forthcoming weekend action, a high court action and, quite possibly, some 80s cinema action are all up for discussion. Feel free to post any other questions or issues for the pod (today starring James Richardson, Barry Glendenning, Paul Doyle and John Ashdown) in the comments below. JA 10.50am: OK, morning meeting update. Coming up today: • All the fall-out and follow-up to last night's Premier League matches: the state of Ryan Giggs's right arm, Chelsea's away-day woes, Tottenham's latest combustion, Arsenal's friendly next six games and the tightening at the bottom in the fight for survival. • The latest from Portsmouth and the two mystery investors that have handily popped up out of the woodwork at this hour of need. • Fitness issues for Steve Borthwick and Stephen Ferris ahead of the upcoming Six Nations matches. • The latest build-up to Vancouver 2010. We'll have news and a gallery of the final preparations later in the day. • The burgeoning row between the ECB/county cricket and Lalit Modi over the Twenty20 Champions League fixtures overlapping the English season. • And in the ICC World Twenty20 qualifiers: it's Afghanistan v USA, with Afghanistan closing in on victory . • On the sportblog: there's Football Weekly Extra, Classic YouTube, Eddie Butler's latest excerpt from The Breakdown and Andy Wilson's weekly Super League blog. JD 11.15am: Afghanistan have seen off the US by 29 runs to reach the Super Fours at the ICC World Twenty20 qualifiers. JD 11.37am: You know that terrible Jamie Redknapp advert for Thomas Cook? The one that discourages you from ever taking a Thomas Cook holiday? Well, it turns out it's boosted sales . Bravo to the Redknapps and their lack of shame. TL 12.30pm: Some lunchtime reading for you: Andy Wilson's latest Super League blog , Talking Horses and some very strange quotes from Sepp Blatter , regarding John Terry's alleged dalliances. JD 1.19pm: Steven Gerrard has had his say on Howard Webb's failure to penalise Cesc Fabregas for handball in the dying seconds of Liverpool's game against Arsenal last night: "The referee told the Liverpool wall in the first half that if anyone raises their arms above their waist he was going to give a penalty. So for some crazy reason he didn't give it." The "crazy reason" could've been that it was outside the area, although that doesn't excuse Webb for missing the offence. 1.42pm: The best thing about Cup finals are the Cup final songs. No, hang on, the worst thing about Cup finals are the Cup final songs. In fact, why don't you make up your own minds, with the aid of Aston Villa's Carling Cup final song, performed by former X-Factor finalist Niki Evans. JA 2pm: A quick Six Nations news line: Ireland flanker Stephen Ferris has been passed fit for Saturday's game with France in Paris after coming through training today unscathed. JD 2.45pm: Amir Khan looks to be lining up Paulie Malignaggi for his Stateside boxing debut, with a 15 May date in the offing at Madison Square Garden. Khan said: "15 May is the date that I have, the fight will be in America, and the opponent – we are looking at Malignaggi. We were looking at [Juan Manuel] Márquez, who pulled out, so it's Malignaggi up to now, and we want to hear what he thinks about the fight. Golden Boy have put the fight to his promoter Lou DiBella, so we will see where we go from here. "I want to fight him in his home town [New York] and beat him in his home town in front of his own people. The fight has not been made 100% yet but I think there is a very good chance of it happening." JD 3.09pm: Virgin's preparations for the new F1 season have taken a blow, with the team forced to abandon testing due to lack of spare parts . JA 3.12pm: As you can see from the picture above, Steven Gerrard met Madame Tussauds waxwork today. There's a joke about the model falling over in here somewhere, but I can't quite find it. Feel free to have a go beneath the line. JA 3.44pm: Manchester United's Ryan Giggs has been ruled out for four weeks with a fractured right arm. JA 3.49pm: In rugby union, Gloucester have announced that Sir Ian McGeechan is to work with the club in "an advisory capacity". JA 3.58pm: Here's that Giggs-out-for-four-weeks-with-arm-fracture story in full . But to summarise: he's fractured his arm. And he's out for four weeks. JA 5.06pm: That's all from the Today in Sport blog. I'll leave you with the news that the FA has charged Avram Grant with improper conduct for confronting referee Kevin Friend at half-time during the 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Tuesday. Feel free to continue discussing the day's issues below the line. We'll be back tomorrow. PW
