Been there photo competition, October: red

The Luminaria is showcased in Nottingham once every year. It's a sculpture people walk into to be moved by a sense of wonder at the beauty of light and colour Photograph: Steven Elliot Because of the humidity and altitude, some of the parts of India are characterized by beautiful red dawns and sunsets. The picture shows three herons feasting in the waters of the Yamuna river at dawn, right opposite the most recognisable sight of India - Taj Mahal in Agra Photograph: Natalia Cherskhi The mesmerizing red of Laguna Colorada in Bolivia Photograph: Dominic Burdon One of the pleasures of being in big cities like Madrid is stumbling upon events by accident. On my way home from Retiro Park I saw signs for The Human Race 10k. I hung around to see what was up and runners began streaming out of Retiro Park in their red shirts Photograph: Shehani Kay Travelling back in time in Surrey Photograph: Alan Clifford I took this photo of my girlfriend in Tama Zoo, Tokyo. It was about a week after the leaves had turned and seemed too good an opportunity to miss Photograph: Olly Denton Old Red Revolutionary, Havana, Cuba Photograph: Anthony Craddock Red traffic light Photograph: Melissa Chong A picture of my daughter dancing at the end of term dance festival in Mijas, Andalucia, Spain. All the children perform the traditional flamenco dances they have learnt during the year. Sugary sweet it is not, the children dance with intensity and passion in the most amazing handmade dresses Photograph: Zena Robinson Red sari, red mosque Photograph: Jonny Menary Waiting to bowl at Singapore Cricket Club Photograph: Nick Board Taken at a market in Pisac, part of the sacred valley, Peru. Corn and maize is sold in many forms throughout Peru, including various shades of red Photograph: Jodie Trowsdale Red Boats, Liverpool waterfront, UK Photograph: Donna Cumming Freshly caught red fish from a historical fish market in Jakarta, Indonesia Photograph: Pramod Kanakath Red lantern, taken on the streets of Dali during the Lantern festival (or Mooncake festival), Yunnan provence, China Photograph: Gavin Yam Taken on a foggy Christmas Eve at Buttermere in the Lake District. I've no idea what the story is behind the rose but I love the hint at an untold story Photograph: Judith Duddle Taken in Sidi Bou Said, Tunis, a beautiful suburb which stuck to a striking colour scheme of white, blue and the occasional splash of red such as this Photograph: Maggie Gray Street musician family in Rajasthan, India Photograph: Michaela Larosse Robert Tyler, photographer: Tibetan girl, taken near Mount Kailash, Tibet Natalie Mayer, judge: This is a classic composition, and a wonderful expression has been caught. I wonder if the photographer was thinking of Steve McCurry's famous Afgahn Girl image when he shot this? This photographer has made a technically competent image and captured an expression that is very endearing. Lovely. Photograph: Robert Tyler Robert Hoey, photogapher: School girls at the market, Inle Lake, Shan State, Burma Natalie Mayer, judge: This is a nice natural moment, well captured. Choosing a wider aperture in order to blur out that background would have helped remove those distracting back elements. Photograph: Robert Hoey Winning image taken by Peter Leyden: 'Red Cabin in a Black and White World', taken from a cruise ship near Bodø, Norway, north of the Arctic Circle. I love the contrast of the bright red cabin sitting among the stark black trees and white snow. Natalie Mayer, judge : This is lovely. Cold and crisp. The sparse composition works well giving the image a good sense of isolation. Photograph: Peter Leyden
