An unknown neighbour used glycerine to stop their birdbath freezing over. But unfortunately bird feathers stay 'wet' for a long time and can no longer keep them warm. He was like this from around noon until dark, but the next morning he was his normal fluffy self by kintired Photograph: kintired/Flickr Photograph: kintired/guardian.co.uk Sparrowhawk - red in beak and claw. I noticed a little hulking shape in the garden. Carefully backing away from the window, I was able to retrieve the camera from the next room. It took about ten minutes for this sparrowhawk to devour the small bird it had ambushed.
