The best of Mahler on YouTube
Going along with my CD recommendations of Mahler symphonies as part of my piece in G2 today , I've done a bit of digging and found some memorable and even epoch-making performances of the same pieces on video, all of them in relatively high visual quality, and all of them uploaded by the invaluable community of Mahlerian YouTubers. Apart from those jarring moments where you have to dial up the next part of the movement (YouTube's one abiding link with the 78-rpm era), you'll get an echt-Mahlerisch experience from all of these complete performances. Enjoy! Simon Rattle's Second from Birmingham in 1998 Leonard Bernstein's Fifth with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1973 Michael Tilson Thomas's Seventh with the San Francisco Symphony at the 2007 proms Rattle's Eighth with the National Youth Orchestra at the 2002 proms Bernstein's Ninth, also with the Vienna Philharmonic
