Dirty Oil

These days the bulk of America's oil supply comes not from the Middle East but from tranquil Canada – and specifically from the aboriginal lands of northern Alberta. Leslie Iwerks's impassioned and exhaustive documentary shows the effects of this tar-sand exploration. "You can't have the world's largest energy project in your backyard without messing up the backyard," shrugs one local activist. Iwerks's camera leads us on a tour of the smokestacks, churned earth and poisoned streams. In under a decade, a slice of forest the size of Florida has been quietly converted into moonscape.
