Dracula or Vlad?

The Tobias twins, Gert and Uwe, are exhibiting their trademark gigantic woodcuts at Nottingham Contemporary this month, their first show in the UK. The twins' work often draws on central European folklore, including the legend of Dracula. Speaking in Nottingham, however, they admitted they'd never heard of Bram Stoker's aristocratic bloodsucker before they moved to Germany as 12- year-olds. In their native Transylvania, where they were brought up under the Ceausescu regime, they knew of him as Vlad the Impaler – a national hero and defender of the country's liberty.
