Wigan Athletic hijack Middlesbrough bid for Celtic's Gary Caldwell

The Celtic defender Gary Caldwell was tonight on the verge of a transfer U-turn after heading for talks with Wigan Athletic. Caldwell underwent a medical at Middlesbrough yesterday after apparently agreeing a three-and-a-half-year deal at the Riverside, where he would be been reunited with his former manager Gordon Strachan. Yet that deal now appears dead after the late intervention of Roberto Martínez. The Wigan manager was tempted Caldwell with the prospect of Premier League football.
