Stylewatch: Sam's sartorial campaign falters
Sam Cameron started the week with the style momentum and no mistake. Day one and she landed a massive sartorial punch with a tobacco coloured boyfriend jacket, artfully styled with pushed up sleeves and a silk T-shirt. Next came the on-trend cape. Kapow! Yesterday, Stylewatch was expecting a knockout blow during her solo first day out on the campaign trail. But alas she's gone for a military jacket, floral blouse and Converse, and suddenly the style mo is swinging away from her. Smart-casual is a tricky look for anyone to pull off, and it looks as though Cameron, normally at ease mixing Bond Street with high street, has panicked big time. The floral is a little too twee while the military jacket is more 2005 Gap than this season's haute-military look by Parisian label Balmain. The trousers really should have been substituted for blue jeans, the middle-class 4X4 Converse should have been substituted for Topshop ballet pumps. She should have had the confidence to take her fashion savvy to its logical conclusion and channelled the off-duty model look as trademarked by Kate Moss. Cameron's reticence to go full-on fashionista is understandable, but even so, her choice of an army-style jacket is odd. Is she making a playful nod to her husband's national service proposal? Does she want the message to be that she's just one of us, just one of the troops? Either way she needs to lose the floral blouse pronto.
