South Africa clean up England to square a series they deserved to win

It's all over. And it now seems miraculous that England managed to draw the series. They were steamrollered today by bowling of the highest quality - and the highest pace. There were no heroics from England, though there was some predictable defiance from their batsman of the tour, Paul Collingwood, who was in aggressive mode. But there was nothing left to give from the rest. South Africa's pace attack, reinforced by Wayne Parnell, who did not look out of place in this company, bullied England into submission. Morne Morkel bowled with rare hostility, extracting venomous bounce. At one point he took three wickets in the space of six balls. Dale Steyn, their jewel, was barely needed. England's tactics at the start were unusual but logical. Collingwood (in form) attacked. Kevin Pietersen (out of form) blocked. That actually made sense. But Pietersen could not proceed for too long in self-denial mode. He swung at a wide delivery from Parnell and edged to Mark Boucher. Ian Bell could not cope with Morkel's steep bounce. Nor could Matt Prior, caught hooking wildly second ball. Stuart Broad was slow to arrive in the middle and slow to depart soon after. On review he was given out caught behind off the glove. It was mystifying why he left the arena shaking his head. JP Duminy got the last couple of wickets, Ryan Sidebottom recognising the futility of coming out again after lunch. 1-1. How was it only 1-1?
