Five things I know about style: Lulu Guinness

1 Kensington Market had a big influence on me when I was growing up. I bought my first handbag from there when I was 12. It wasn't very glamorous – it was made from a cut-off pair of jeans – but I was very proud of it. 2 Dress to suit your shape. I was a rather fat child, so I spent my childhood gazing at other people. I came into my own at 16 – I discovered Portobello Market and realised what suited me: 40s and 50s tea dresses. I'd come back with carrier bags full. 3 My style icon is Elsa Schiaparelli. When I discovered her, everything fell into place. I loved the way she collaborated with Dalí – she incorporated surrealism and visual wit into fashion, which made me realise that I could, too. 4 I love Moschino and other labels, but I've realised that it's important to support British fashion. Recently I rediscovered Anglomania – it's wearable, affordable Vivienne Westwood. Erdem knows how to make clothes for women, too. 5 Be true to your own style. I never wear jeans or tracksuit bottoms. I love dresses and skirts with stilettos – they make your figure look better. My daughters get hysterical seeing me in trousers.
