Threats to Nicaraguan newspaper
The Nicaraguan newspaper El Nuevo Diario claims its journalists were threatened after it published articles about alleged corruption in the government of the president, Daniel Ortega . In recent weeks the newspaper says it has received a series of phone calls and emails. And the journalist responsible for the stories, Luis Galeano , has been a particular target. In condemning the threats, human rights and journalist organisations stressed that "without press freedom there is no freedom." Complaints that the Sandinista government has persecuted its critics have become more frequent of late. Sources: Knight Centre In Spanish: EFE
