DVD review: A Serious Man

Michael Stuhlbarg is the put-upon lead in a disquieting, slow-burn black comedy that takes the Coen brothers back to their midwest upbringing in a largely Jewish community. The plot mostly consists of ritual humiliations landing in the lap of the Job-like Stuhlbarg, an honourable man surrounded by problems in a caricatured suburban life. After the marvellous No Country for Old Men and the starry Burn After Reading, it feels like the brothers are taking a detour back to the oddball and personal, but despite some good performances from a resolutely star-free cast, it's never a rival to Fargo for bringing it all back home.
