Holly Miranda: The Magician's Private Library

Since his work with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, not to mention his own band, TV on the Radio, New York's David Sitek has been the go-to producer for anyone seeking a luxe sense of disorientation. His latest collaborator is Holly Miranda, once of a more conventionally rockular outfit, The Jealous Girlfriends. Miranda's solo debut takes her headlong down Sitek's rabbit-hole into an underworld thick with wooze and brass. It feels like a slightly unequal pairing, with Sitek smothering Miranda's vocals more than necessary. But it suggests a dreamier TVOTR fronted by a contralto Cat Power.
