Leeds today: Bus fare petition, train station campaign and White Rose switch-on
Good morning Leeds. Hope you had a good weekend. To start the week I'd like to flag up a couple of events this week and next which may be of interest. Are you interested in using blogs, text messages, Facebook, Twitter and other free web sites (sometimes called "social media") to help a group or organisation that you belong to? The next Leeds Social Media Surgery will be held tomorrow at the Round Foundry Media Centre (6pm-8pm). John Popham has blogged on the recent first Yorkshire Social Media Surgery for Musicians . By the way, there are just a couple of places left for the Guardian Leeds and South Leeds Community Radio community blogging workshop on Thursday, November 18 at Hillside, Beeston. A campaign for fairer bus fares in Leeds has proven so popular on lovinleeds.com that it's had to be moved to its own servers and domain. The Fairer Fares campaign can now be found here - Leeds Central MP Hilary Benn has become the third Leeds MP to sign the petition. There's a report on recent bus fare rises over at Leeds Student. A tribute will be led by the Lord Mayor of Leeds next weekend as service men and women who lost their lives in conflict are remembered. Far Headingley Village Society AGM will include a review of the year's activities and successes and will also include a talk by Martin Wainwright, Northern Editor of the Guardian, author and President of Leeds Civic Trust who will be speaking on Localism in Far Headingley. Police are urging football fans attending the derby match between Leeds United and Hull City on Tuesday night to carefully plan their travels. What the papers say A star of Emmerdale will paying a special visit to the White Rose Shopping Centre tonight to officially switch on the Christmas lights, reports the Morley Observer . Councillors have backed plans to re-open Arthington train station, but remain divided over what benefits it would bring to Otley, reports the Wharfedale Observer . The Yorkshire Post reports that changes could be made to the way elite-level gymnasts in Leeds are trained as part of a move designed to save council bosses almost £200,000 a year.
