World Cup 2010: Spain v Honduras

The Spanish goalkeeper is probably more worried about her questions than the Honduras attack Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Either Superstars is making a come back or the referee and his assistants are going to audition for Britain's Got Talent, as there can be no other reason why they are engaged in a bit of synchronised squat thrust action Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian A plea for Cesc Fabregas, he'll have to have a heart of stone (or a strong desire to increase his bank balance) to ignore this emotional request and head to Camp Nou Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Spanish players huddle before kick-off Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Meanwhile, Cesc Fabregas looks upset as he starts another game on the bench. Though it says a lot for the strength of the Spanish squad if a player of his quality is confined to the bench Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Photograph: guardian.co.uk Roger Espinoza spectacularly clears the danger before Joan Capdevila can pounce Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Sergio Ramos and David Suazo go up for a header Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Spain start strongly and create a number of good chances in the opening quarter of an hour. After peppering the Honduras goal with a number of shots, David Villa finally finds his range, and in spectacular style too. He picks up the ball on the left before cutting inside on a mazey run which takes out Mednoz and Guevara and then jinks past Chavez before firing an unstoppable screamer into the top right corner Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Photograph: guardian.co.uk Sergio Busquets takes one in the chops after venturing too close to Wilson Palacios' flailing arms Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian David Suazo rues his missed chance Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Six minutes into the second half Spain break from their own half and Villa plays the ball wide to Xavi and then receives it back on the edge of the area where he lets one fly. The shot spins off Chavez's shin and over the despairing leap of Vallandares and into the net Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Photograph: guardian.co.uk ...he then celebrates with Fernando Torres Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Photograph: guardian.co.uk On the hour Jesus Navas surges into the right hand side of the Honduras box where instead of just standing him up, Emilio Izaguirre decides to lunge in in a clumsy fashion and the spanish striker ends up in a heap. It's a penalty Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Maynor Figueroa kindly asks the referee's assistant why he gave the penalty, though the Honduran must have been looking the other way as it was a stone-cold penalty Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian With a hat-trick in the offing David Villa makes sure he takes the kick, he confidently places the ball rather than going for power Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian ...but despite sending the keeper the wrong way, he puts it wide of the goal. That hat-trick will have to wait Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Photograph: guardian.co.uk Acrobatic, spectacular but ultimately rubbish as Sergio Ramos doesn't connect with the ball Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian In his first attack after coming on for Xavi, Cesc Fabregas bursts into the area and rounds the keeper and rolls the ball goalwards but he sees his effort cleared off the line Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Photograph: guardian.co.uk It's Fernando Torres first time in the starting 11 since having right-knee surgery in April so it's no wonder he looks a bit rusty and tired. He missed a couple of early chances which he would no doubt have buried if he was operating at full fitness. So it's no surprise that he is replaced 20 minutes from the end by Juan Manuel Mata Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Photograph: guardian.co.uk The crowd appreciate David Villa's exquisite piece of control Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian North London comes to Jo'burg and local rivalries are forgotten as Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas and Spurs' Wilson Palacios swap shirts at the end of the match Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian
