The Ashes 2010: Tim Bresnan makes his mark at the MCG
England's back-up pace bowlers were seeking to make an impression against Victoria at the MCG today as they battled to replace the injured Stuart Broad in the third Test in Perth next week. Although Chris Tremlett, the Surrey fast bowler, has been widely perceived to be the most likely replacement for Broad, Yorkshire's Tim Bresnan is also in the running and, when he came on as first change, he took the first wicket with his second ball, having Ryan Carters caught at the wicket. England rested Steve Finn, Graeme Swann, Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen, who had caused the first blip on England's otherwise impeccable tour by being stopped for speeding down the Great Ocean Road in a yellow Lamborghini. Matt Prior gave wicketkeeping duties to Steven Davies but Prior proved fallible at third slip in the first over when Michael Hill, facing his first ball, edged Tremlett but Prior dropped a simple catch at the third attempt. England were relieved to get on the field at a largely deserted MCG after a storm had struck Melbourne the previous evening, continuing the theme of a surprisingly wet tour which has helped the tourists feel even more at home.
