DVD review: Katalin Varga
An oddly haunting piece, Katalin Varga is both a revenge film and a road movie, though the form of transport here is a horse-drawn cart. This gives it a stately tempo in which fate is a major player and the unusual soundtrack of ethereal, foreboding music mixed with wildlife sounds is a large factor in its uniqueness. It's set in Transylvania, but the writer-director is Englishman Peter Strickland. This is his first film, and made for €30,000, it is resolutely unflashy and, but for the mobile phones, could be set in the middle ages.
