Wales' Lee Byrne claims he was tripped by Phil Godman of Scotland
The Wales full-back Lee Byrne has claimed to the Western Mail that he is no cheat following complaints that he dived to win a pivotal penalty in his side's last-gasp win over Scotland. Byrne told the Welsh newspaper that he fell over after "a trip" and that he was "amazed" Scotland did not then kick the ball out to end the game with the scores level. Scotland's players and coach criticised Byrne after Wales' 31‑24 comeback, claiming he "milked" a collision with Phil Godman. The resultant penalty brought the scores level before Wales's late try. "There was no malice. I didn't stick my leg out or block Lee," the Scot said. "He milked it." Byrne retorted: "The video evidence will show it was a trip. I kicked the ball through and Phil left his foot there. If he is going to do that, he has to expect to be penalised. It was the referee's call about the yellow card, but I had no doubt it was deserving of a penalty." Reflecting on the hectic finish, Byrne said: "There was just so much going on in those last 10 minutes. My nerves had gone – in fact everything had gone by then. After the penalty it was level, the clock showed time was up and I was amazed Scotland didn't kick the ball out. "It was brilliant then to be looking up from the bottom of a ruck and seeing Shane [Williams] give that wave as he went over for the try. When we got back to the dressing room the first words I had were with Shane. He had given a wave before putting the ball down and I wanted to check what that was about. "Shane said he wanted to keep the crowd on their toes and we had a laugh … but we knew how close we had been to losing again after England." The Byrne moment had turned the game, with the Scots reduced to 13-men and Wales awarded a penalty from which they drew level. Scotland's coach Andy Robinson insisted that the Irish referee George Clancy got it wrong. "I'm really disappointed about the Byrne decision because I thought he dived, or there was no contact made by Phil," he said after the game.
