New Orleans Saints' Drew Brees silent on contract ahead of Super Bowl

The New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees refused to be drawn today on reports that the team are preparing to offer him a contract extension, saying he was focused solely on Sunday's Super Bowl against the Indianapolis Colts . NFL Network's Michael Lombardi had reported yesterday that the Saints were eager to negotiate a new deal with Brees, whose existing contract runs to the end of next season. With the Colts owner, Jim Irsay, having announced on Tuesday that he wanted to give his team's leading quarterback, Peyton Manning, a new contract that would make him the best paid player in the league, there had been speculation that the Saints would look to act quickly. Both players are represented by the same agent, Tom Condon, and it was suggested that the Saints did not want to let him use any new Manning deal as a starting point for negotiations. "I'm not worried about that, especially right now before this game," Brees said today. "I'm just trying to win this football game." Earlier the Saints' head coach, Sean Payton, had expressed similar sentiments, saying: "I'm not familiar with that [contract talks with Brees]. I'm sure that at the right time all that stuff will be taken care of. I think there's a right time for that and it's after the Super Bowl."
