World Cup 2010: Slovenia v England in pictures

England and their fans are in Port Elizabeth for their must win game against Slovenia. Is this a plea for positivity ahead of the match or a statement that Friday's game was so woeful? Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk Let's hope that any reference to England fans and animals refers to these guys and not the sort of fans that were at Marsailles in 1998 Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk The police line up by the ground just in case Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk A special goal has been set up in case Emile Heskey plays Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk A nation waits and hopes... Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk Let's hope that the shoulders of these eleven are broad enough to support the weight of all that hope Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk The Slovenian fans show off their singing voices Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk ...as does John Terry Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk England fans display their allegiance to the manager Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk England start well and at full tempo and a number of chances are created down the right Photograph: Tom Jenkins As well as Johnson's foraging runs, James Milner is having a productive time, putting in a number of good crosses Photograph: Tom Jenkins In the twenty third minute, Milner puts in another great cross, this time it's a wonderful curling cross into the space onto the edge of the six-yard box which Jermain Defoe sprints into and leaps to connect firmly with the ball. The ball spins off his shin towards Handanovic but the pace of the cross means that he has no chance Photograph: Tom Jenkins Defoe smiles as the nation breaths a huge sigh of relief Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk Creater and scorer celebrate Photograph: Tom Jenkins Just two minutes after the goal, Milner and Defoe combine again but this time they are denied by Slovenia keeper Samir Handanovic who bravely dives at the feet of Jermain Defoe and punches the ball clear. The ball falls to Frank Lampard on the edge of the box but his left foot shot sails over the bar Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk You could be forgiven for thinking the game was being played at Wembley Photograph: Tom Jenkins England have really got the bit between their teeth following the goal and they really shot have doubled their lead on the half hour mark. Handanovic in the Slovenian goal, who is having an inspired game, parries a Defoe blaster from 12 yards and the ball falls to Rooney. He turns and slots the ball though to Stevie G in the middle who strokes the ball towards the far corner... Photograph: Tom Jenkins ...but Handanovic leaps to his left to make a wonderful save and then snaffles up the ball after it squirms from his grasp and trickles towards the goal a la Robert Green. The England captain can't believe it Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk Frank Lampard leaps high to keep the pressure on Slovenia Photograph: Tom Jenkins Wayne Rooney, who though not performing as well as he has throughout the season, has a better game than he did against Algeria (though that's not too hard) Photograph: Tom Jenkins Glen Johnson earns a yellow card - a ridiculous decision by the referee Photograph: Tom Jenkins An unthodox but valiant challenge by John Terry as he launches his body in the way of a shot from Zlatko Dedic Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk He's been excellent all afternoon, but here James Milner is forced off the ball Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk Back by popular demand - Joe Cole comes on for the injured Wayne Rooney Photograph: Tom Jenkins Wayne Rooney is dejected after being subbed Photograph: Tom Jenkins John Terry puts his criticism of Fabio Capello behind him and puts in a solid performance in the heart of defence Photograph: Tom Jenkins A surging run and cross by Steven Gerrard Photograph: Tom Jenkins Joe Cole moves away from Bostjan Cesar, but despite the clamour for him to start earlier in the week, he doesn't put in an inspirational performance, just a competent one Photograph: Tom Jenkins After a tense final 20 minutes when Slovenia created a number of half chances which England did well to defend, the final whistle goes and the Three Lions are though to the knockout round. As the US won 1-0 in injury time, that means that Slovenia are out and the Americans win the group Photograph: Tom Jenkins Photograph: guardian.co.uk A happy looking Fabio Capello celebrates with his captain Steven Gerrard after the final whistle Photograph: Tom Jenkins
