Turkish journalist sentenced to jail
Turkish journalist Irfan Atkan has been sentenced to 15 months in prison under Turkey's draconian anti-terror laws An Istanbul court sentenced him to prison for an article published last October in the bi-monthly journal Express . Its editor-in-chief, Merve Erol , was fined £7,000. The pair were said to have violated article 7 of the country's anti-terror law, which prohibits "propaganda" on behalf of a terrorist organisation, by quoting a PKK member and carrying a one-sentence extract the Özgür Halk (Free People) magazine. Aktan, who is also a contributor to Newsweek , and Erol are planning to appeal. Source: Index on Censorship
