Frankie & the Heartstrings: Hunger – review

It's no surprise that this Sunderland quintet's debut is produced by Edwyn Collins: they fetishise many of the things that helped Collins's first band, Orange Juice, pioneer what would become indie rock. So bookishness and naive romanticism are accompanied by trebly guitars. Girls are a problem, of course, but nothing that can't be solved by a record collection. They might have more luck if they had more to offer the opposite sex than worn-out reference points such as old Scott Walker records ("Photograph") or F Scott Fitzgerald novels ("Tender").
