Mystery bird: African fish eagle, Haliaeetus vocifer

African fish eagle, Haliaeetus vocifer , photographed at Lake Zway , roughly 60 miles south of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Africa. Image: Dan Logen, 5 February 2011 [ velociraptorize ]. Nikon D300s, 600 mm lens, ISO 500, f/14, 1/1000 sec Question: This lovely Ethiopian mystery bird shares a genus with another bird that many of you are familiar with. Can you name the shared genus and this species? Response: This is an adult African fish eagle, Haliaeetus vocifer , which is one of eight extant species that have been placed into the genus, Haliaeetus -- the sea eagles. Perhaps the most famous of the sea eagles is the bald eagle, H. leucocephalus , the national bird of the United States. A curious feature of the sea eagles is that sister species pairs have one with a white head and the other with a tan head. The apparent sister species of the African fish eagle is the critically endangered Madagascar fish eagle, H. vociferoides , which has a tan head. I've shown this species to you twice before: an immature bird in Tanzania and a fishing adult . You are invited to review all of the daily mystery birds by going to their dedicated graphic index page. If you have bird images, video or mp3 files that you'd like to share with a large and (mostly) appreciative audience, feel free to email them to me for consideration.
