World Cup 2010: Switzerland target Chile and top spot in Group H
Ottmar Hitzfeld, the man who masterminded Switzerland's remarkable 1-0 victory over Spain, believes his side face an equally difficult assignment against Chile tomorrow, insisting once again they might have to employ conservative tactics to negate the opposition's attacking threat. Switzerland's defeat of Spain was described as "the Miracle of Durban" in La Tribune de Genève and Hitzfeld says his team can now have genuine aspirations of winning their group. Nonetheless he was sufficiently impressed by Chile's 1-0 victory against Honduras to believe that his side will be underdogs again. • Follow the Guardian's World Cup team on Twitter • Sign up to play our great Fantasy Football game • Stats centre: Get the lowdown on every player • The latest team-by-team news, features and more "Switzerland are not favourites; it will be Chile," said the man who won the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. "Against Honduras the Chileans were unbelievable and they could have won 3-0 or 4-0 instead of 1-0. They are a solid unit with very fast players. In terms of strategy we will have to be even more compact than we were against Spain." The defeat of Spain meant Switzerland equalled Italy's record of five successive clean sheets in the World Cup but they will be without Philippe Senderos after the centre-half, newly of Fulham, damaged ankle ligaments. The captain, Alex Frei, and the midfielder Valon Behrami also have injury concerns and are doubtful to start against opponents who can be guaranteed to attack. "Chile will want to qualify before they face Spain in their last group game," said the Swiss defender Stephan Lichsteiner. "The [Chile] team is very strong, the players are so skilful, we must work very hard to stand up to them." Chile may also be able to recall Humberto Suazo, their leading scorer in qualifying, who is fit again after a thigh injury. Their coach, Marcelo Bielsa, has demanded his players be more ruthless in front of goal. "The objective is to pass to the next round and start writing new records," he said. "If the group is decided on goal difference, then we will rue the chances we missed against Honduras. We could have scored more goals and we were on top." If there is a winner at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, that team will almost certainly reach the knockout phase. "Switzerland have created the biggest upset of the tournament so far and are a good team," the Chile defender Ismael Fuentes said. "Spain made one mistake against them and paid for it, so we have to concentrate for the whole 90 minutes."
