Questions for BA

The European Transport Workers' Federation civil aviation section meeting in Brussels has deep concerns at the nature and cost of the BA cabin crew strike ( Cabin fever , 8 June). BA chief executive Willie Walsh has taken a hostile approach in this dispute, which has undesirable implications for all workers, not only in the UK, but across the whole of Europe and beyond. The losses incurred by BA after 22 days of strikes are around £184m . BA's figures for May show a 14.1% drop in passenger numbers year-on-year. These are not sensible business practices for the long-term success of BA as a major, premium international airline. The ETF calls on BA shareholders to question the strategy of heavy losses and falls in passenger numbers being followed by their chief executive – made even more relevant with the prospect of further strikes being called during the profitable peak period of July and August.
