The Open 2010: The best images from the first round

These scoreboard operators are up early, readying themselves for tee-off. The guy on the right has got a plum job today, watching Tiger Woods, Justin Rose and Camilo Villegas. The guy on the left doesn't look quite so enamored with his trio. Ikeda who? Photograph: Tom Jenkins Watch out! Golf in progress. Not sure this is necessary - it's only a practice putting green Photograph: Tom Jenkins Purple paisley trousers? On a man? On a golf course? Wonder who that'll be ... Photograph: Tom Jenkins Yep, it's the big man, John Daly - the former Open champion, no less. Nice to see he's not lost his sense of colour co-ordination Photograph: Tom Jenkins These guys don't seem to care. 'Daly for President'. 'John Daly Living Legend'. Really? Photograph: Tom Jenkins Daly is one of the early leaders with five birdies in the opening nine holes, gamely followed by this man, Rory McIlroy. The 21-year-old birdies the third and scores an eagle (two) on the ninth, leaving him on 33 at the turn Photograph: Tom Jenkins Woods, meanwhile, has opted for a new putter for this championship ... Photograph: Tom Jenkins No embarrassments on the first green as he makes his par putt Photograph: Tom Jenkins His second shot on the 453-yard second hole enables him to make his first birdie of the round Photograph: Tom Jenkins Being beaten on the golf course is one thing, but being outdone in the fashion stakes is another - and Ian Poulter was never going to let that happen. The king of bling, or whatever you want to call him, Poulter - in delightful pink trim - lines up a big drive on his way to a round of one under par Photograph: Tom Jenkins Someone's happy Photograph: Tom Jenkins Here's Daly again, waiting for his playing partner Seung-Yul Noh to tee off at the 16th Photograph: Tom Jenkins A close up shows Seung-Yul No has taken the tartan theme a little too far - shoes and all Photograph: Tom Jenkins Daly's gone round in six under par, though a bogey on this, the 17th, didn't help his card Photograph: Tom Jenkins Here's Nick Watney doing some topographical analysis with his caddy out the 17th. Left a bit, right a bit. Go on, just give it a bash Photograph: Tom Jenkins Defending champion Stewart Cink just misses his birdie putt on 17th - he ends two under par Photograph: Tom Jenkins ... as does Justin Rose Photograph: Tom Jenkins Tom Watson is the centre of attention, but there's no repeating last year's form. He's one over today Photograph: Tom Jenkins The sun shines as the final starters begin their rounds Photograph: Tom Jenkins Back with Woods, now, who's glancing up to the heavens on the 18th. Looks like a tricky one Photograph: Tom Jenkins Safely done. Five under for the round. There's nothing wrong with that Photograph: Tom Jenkins Actually, it turns out five under is rather pitiful compared to this guy - McIlroy has shot five more birdies (in seven holes) since we last caught up with him. He's now on the 17th, needing two birdies to complete the lowest scoring round of golf in Major history ... sadly, he misses this short birdie putt Photograph: Tom Jenkins Onto the 18th, where he crosses the Swilken Bridge and gets another birdie. Nine under. Fantastic stuff Photograph: Tom Jenkins He's the clear leader at the end of day one, with Louis Oosthuizen two shots back Photograph: Tom Jenkins
