Gonjasufi: A Sufi and a Killer

Lurking somewhere between the psychedelic paranoia of TV on the Radio and the murk of obscure 1990s hip-hop crew New Kingdom is this debut album from Gonjasufi, a reformed addict turned yoga teacher. Hip-hop doesn't quite cover this intense, genre-trashing analogue sprawl, although pro beatmakers from LA are involved. There are "real Indians" on the mental Bollywood fusion "Kowboyz & Indians", while "Suzie Q" sounds like the Stooges; all the while, Gonjasufi raps, mutters, exclaims and croons, a 21st-century mystic in the wilderness. Compelling.
