Passenger bound for Berlin had been dead for up to 12 hours

Thursday 5 November, Apology: Gitta Jarant and Anusic were informed in September 2010 that no charges were to be brought against them. In response to this article an apology was published in the Corrections and clarifications column on 17 June 2011 . Gitta Jarant, 66, and her daughter Anke Anusic, 41, were arrested on suspicion of failing to give notification of death at Liverpool's John Lennon airport last Saturday. Jarant and Anusic said that Curt Willi Jarant, 91, in a wheelchair, was asleep when they tried to check in. He had died up to 12 hours before of natural causes, police said today. Security at the airport was alerted after worker Andrew Millea became suspicious. A spokesman for Greater Manchester police said: "A Home Office post-mortem examination concluded the man died of natural causes. The pathologist also concluded the death occurred up to 12 hours before he was pronounced dead." The two women, who are German nationals but live in Oldham, Greater Manchester, were also travelling with two young children. They have denied that Curt Jarant, who had been suffering from Alzheimer's, had been dead for some time and have said that two employees had helped them put him into the wheelchair from a taxi. Police inquiries are believed to be focusing on whether the pair were trying to avoid the costs and bureaucracy of repatriating the body to Germany. Police said the two women were still under arrest on suspicion of failing to give notification of death and had been bailed until June. • This article was amended on Tuesday 21 December 2010 following a legal complaint
