Burnley v Blackburn Rovers - as it happened

Good morning. Neither team needs any added motivation for an East Lancashire derby but Burnley may be feeling the pressure to win more keenly given their current league standing. The home side have won only once in their last 20 league games and currently sit 19th in the Premier League, three points from safety. Despite all that the defender Clarke Carlisle says he is relishing life with the club . "I'm really grateful that I'm still alive, let alone have a job beyond that, playing in the Premier League and I've got a beautiful wife and kids," says Carlisle, who had his fair share of troubles in younger life, though his is still bitter about his failure to follow up an initial Countdown victory with further successes on the show. If that's not enough to keep you entertained in the build-up to kick-off, here are the squad sheets for today's game , and you could always take a look at David Hills's award-winning diary column Said and Done . Throughout the day you can find out all the latest scores from across the UK and Europe right here , and what it all means for the league standings with our stats centre . Burnley: Jensen, Mears, Duff, Cort, Jordan, Alexander, Elliott, McDonald, Paterson, Steven Fletcher, Nugent. Subs: Weaver, Carlisle, Blake, Thompson, Eagles, Fox, Cork. Blackburn: Brown, Salgado, Jones, Samba, Givet, Dunn, Nzonzi, Olsson, Diouf, Roberts, Pedersen. Subs: Bunn, Emerton, Grella, Kalinic, Hoilett, Di Santo, Chimbonda. Referee: Mike Dean (Wirral) The clocks went forward last night ... apparently. Nobody told me and I'm not sure anyone's told Ian Payne, Chris Kamara and Jermain Defoe, who are sitting in the Sky Sports studio discussing yesterday's results, when they should be kikcking back to watch the build-up to this match ... which is supposed to be on instead of them. Kammy is wearing a very interesting shirt, a sort of shiny, tan brown number that looks like it was made from the paper used to line Milk Tray boxes. An email from Stephen Black: "Re the picture of Clarke Carlisle," he writes. "I've got a seven: 'demonic' is the best I can do. Which begs the question; was this picture selected so that you could subtly indicate your opinion on Burnley's currently gaffe-prone defender?" Clarke's on the bench today. He can't do much damage from there, you'd think. Hats off to Ben Stokes , who's used the wonders of Photoshop to change the letters Clarke's mulling over to R-E-L-E-G-A-T-E-D. Unfortunately, gremlins in the Photoshop on my computer won't let me crop it and stick it up above, so you'll just have to imagine it. Technology, bah! Not long now: Chris, Ian and Jermain have done one and Sky have turned their attention to Turf Moor, for a most uncharacteristic three minutes of pre-match build-up. Click-clack, click-clack, click-clack ... The teams emerge from the tunnel, line up and do the handshake thing. 1 min: Burnley's players cosy up for their pre-match huddle as Chumbawumba's I Get Knocked Down (Tubthumping) blares out over the PA, making a mockery of those who say that when it comes to modern culture Lancashire folk don't have their finger on the pulse. I thought they'd be playing the music from the Hovis advert. Burnley kick off, playing from left to right. 2 min: Michel Salgado comes perilously close to sailing over an advertising hoarding and flying into the crowd behind the Blackburn goal as he contests a through-ball with David Nugent. His persistence pays off - goal kick for Blackburn. 3 min: David Dunn, the only local lad on the field, takes on Wade Elliott and wins a free-kick on the right flank, about 35 yards from goal. Morten Gamst Pedersen takes it and fires it straight into the wall. That's a poor effort. 4 min: Throw-in for Blackburn on the edge of the finalk third. Pedersen tries to Delap the ball into the penalty area, but Burnley head clear. According to Sky's charismatic co-commentator David Platt, Burnley devoted most of Friday's training session to dealing with the threat of Pedersen's throw-ins. That must have been a blast. 6 min: Blackburn win a free-kick about two yards outside the Burnley penalty area, slightly right of centre. El Hadji Diouf, Christopher Samba, David Dunn and Morten Gamst Pedersen have a lengthy chat about what to do next, apparently arriving at the conclusion that the Blackburn cause would be best served by Pedersen leathering the ball straight into the defensive wall again. 9 min: Free-kick for Burnley on the right flank,in the Blackburn left-back position. Graham Alexander sends in a curler, which Leon Cort tries to flick goalwards having shaken off his marker and dashed to the near post. Blackburn clear. 10 min: Throw-in for Burnely on the halfway line, which Tyrone Mears takes. It's almost as exciting as it sounds. 11 min: Burnley striker Steven Fletcher beats Gael Givet for toe down the right wing and tries to send in a cross, but Blackburn clear and embark on a counter-attack. Jason Brown wins a free-kick on the left flank, which Pederson takes. His cross is aimed at Givet, but Burnley clear their lines. 13 mins: For Blackburn, Pedersen tries a shot from distance. His wild slash is high and wide. 14 min: A Salgado foul on Nugent earns Burnely a free-kick out on the left touchline. Alexander's delivery is awful and fails to beat the first man, El Hadji Diouf, who heads clear. 15 min: Martin Olsson picks up a defence-splitting through-ball from Phil Jones and beats Brian Jenson with a coolly taken effort. His "goal" is ruled out for offside. Replays show that Leon Cort was playing him on and the decision was incorrect. 18 min: Free-kick for Blackburn on the edge of the final third, near the left touchline. Pedersen sends a cross into the mixer and Jensen eventually claims. 19 min: Penalty for Blackburn for a blatant dive by Martin Olsson. GOAL! Burnley 0-1 Blackburn (Dunn 20pen) David Dunn takes the spot-kick and slots the ball into the bottom right-hand corner, sending Jensen the wrong way. 21 min: That was a total travesty. Martin Olsson was put through on goal and with Tyrone Mears harrassing him from behind, was one-on-one with Jensen. The Burnley goalkeeper charged off his line and went down far too easily, prompting Olsson to take a dive. Referee Mike Dean pointed to the spot, despite neither Jensen nor Mears having touched the striker. If Dean genuinely thought it was a penalty, it's curious that he didn't book or send off Jensen. That's a strange decision. 25 min: Despite the injustice of that penalty, Burnley deserve to be trailing. Their defending has been poor, to say the least. Even though Jason Roberts is playing alone up front for Blackburn, Burnley's centre-halves are giving him far too much room and time on the ball, while simultaneously failing to monitor Martin Olsson's occasional forays from midfield. 27 min: The camera pans to David Nugent, who's on loan at Burnley from Portsmouth and looks set to suffer the ignominy of getting relegated with two different teams in the same season. 29 min: Burnley win a corner, which Graham Alexander sends in to the near post. Martin Olsson heads clear, but only as far as Alex McDonald, who threrads a through-ball down the left flank, for Nugent to chase. There's too much pace on the ball and it runs out over the endline for a goal-kick. 31 min: "Mike Dean enjoys a penalty doesn't he?" writes Gary Naylor, who is late. "Odds are that after a half-time conflab, he'll even it up." 32 min: Move along folks, nothing to see here ... apart from a bit of agricultural huffing and puffing around midfield. 34 min: Thanks to my colleague Paolo Bandini, I can exclusively reveal that Ben Stokes' Clarke Carlisle-on-Countdown picture is now at the top of this report for your viewing pleasure. 36 min: Martin Olsson lofts a through-ball towards the Burnley penalty area, where Jason Roberts beats three defenders to win possession, control the ball, turn and try to hustle his way into a shooting position. Brian Jensen eventually dives at his feet and takes the ball off his toe. That's woeful defending by the hosts. 38 min: "The ref's already evened it up," writes David Elliott, sticking it to Gary Naylor. "When he goes in at halftime he'll learn that he incorrectly denied Rovers a goal." 39 min: Burnley appeal for a penalty when Christopher Samba brings down Wade Elliott on the edge of the penalty area. It's this much outside the area, so they have to make do with a free-kick in the Blackburn left-back position and a booking for the Blackburn defender. Only referee Mike Dean knows why that was worth a caution and Jensen's "challenge" on Martin Olsson wasn't. 41 min: Interesting Opta stat: Mike Dean has now awarded 16 penalties in 24 matches this season. 42 min: Burnley win a free-kick about 45 yards from the Blackburn goal. Alexander takes it quickly, lofting the ball to Tyrone Mears, who controls with his chest on the right-hand side of the penalty area and tries to dink the ball over Jason Brown in the Blackburn goal. His effort sails wide of the far post, but not by much. 44 min: Moments before that effort by Mears, Michel Salgado went close for Blackburn, volleying a far-post knock-down from El Hadji Diouf a few feet wide. Again, the Burnley defending was lamentable. 44+2 min: Burnley substitution: left-back Stephen Jordan goes off, presumably having picked up a knock. He's replaced by Danny Fox. Half-time Blackburn go in a goal up at the interval in the battle to see who's the tallest Pygmy in the East Lancashire village. 46 min: Blackburn get the second half underway. The Premier League table in running makes for grim viewing for Burnley fans. They're second from bottom, three points behind Hull and West Ham, having played one game more than the former. According to Richard Keys on Sky, Mike Dean has said he gave Blackburn the penalty from which they scored for a combination of fouls by Elliott and Jensen. He made a mistake - the only contact either player made with Olsson came when the Blackburn player caressed Brian Jensen's foot with his trailing leg when he was already halfway to ground. 48 min: Alex McDonald tries to send Steven Fletcher on his way with a long ball up the right flank. Gael Givet hacks clear for Blackburn. 49 min: Blackburn goalkeeper Jason Brown has to charge of his line to deal with a porr back-pass from one of his defenders, whose blushes are spared by my incompetence: I didn't see who it was. 50 min: Burnley win a corner, which Danny Fox takes. His delivery is dreadful, with the ball failing to rise above knee-height or beat the first defender. Blackburn clear easily. 51 min: Burnley are trying hard here, pressurising Blackburn relentlessly without troubling them unduly. They seem bereft of flair or ideas when it comes to decision-making on the edge of the final third. 53 min: Steven Fletcher plays the ball up the left wing to David Nugent. Mears and Graham Alexander combine to switch play to the right touchline. The ball's played to Martin Paterson, who tries a shot but fires his effort straight into the breadbasket of Jason Brown in the Rovers goal. 55 min: Blackburn win a free-kick halfway inside the Burnley half for a trip by Graham Alexander on El Hadji Diouf. Pedersen chips the ball into the edge of the six-yard box, Jensen hesitates and Leon Cort is forced to hack clear. 56 min: Free-kick for Blackburn in the Burnley right-back position, for a foul by Tyrone Mears on Diouf. Pedersen whips the ball straight into the arms of Brian Jensen. 58 min: Alex McDonald robs David Dunn in midfield with a robust challenge and sends the ball down the left flank for Nugent to chase. Blackburn clear. 59 min: Burnley manager Brian Laws decides to inject what passes for a bit of flair at Turf Moor, replacing Martin Paterson with Robbie Blake. 61 min: Burnley attack down the right flank, the ball is crossed into the centre and Christopher Samba half-clears. The ball bounces kindly for Graham Alexander, who shoots wide. 62 min: Burnley defender Mike Duff and his goalkeeper Brian Jensen have a frank exchange of views after the latter failed to help the former, remaining anchored to his line and refusing to come for a long ball played up to Jason Roberts. 64 min: Blackburn prepare to make a substitution. Brett Emerton has shed his tracksuit and is studying a sheet of paper with one of Sam Allardyce's coaching staff, who is pointing at things: pictures of a football, a goal and some arrows, presumably. 66 min: Blackburn substitution: Diouf off, Emerton on. 68 min: Blackburn win a free-kick wide on the right, for an Alexander foul on ... somebody. Pedersen swings it in and Burnley half-clear. The ball breaks back to Pedersen. He sends in a cross and Olsson's left-foot drive beats Jensen, hits the bar and bounces down. I don't know if it crossed the line or not, but Mike Dean is the only man whose opinion matters and he decides it didn't. Salgado heads the rebound wide and Burnley dodge a bullet. 70 min: Burnley substitution: Chris Eagles on, Graham Alexander off. 72 min: For Blackburn, Martin Olsson shoots from distance. Brian Jensen saves. 74 min: Blackburn attack again, with Jason Roberts chesting down a long ball for Martin Olsson, who is being given acres of room by Burnley's defenders, to try and curl a low drive in at the far post. Jensen saves. 74 min: Blackburn substitution: Jason Roberts off, Chelsea loanee and young Argentinian whelp Franco Di Santo on. 76 min: Blackburn goalkeeper Jason Brown rushes off his line to try and beat David Nugent to a through-ball, catches the ball and his momentum carries him outside his area. He lets go of the ball quickly and Mike Dean decides he didn't handle outside the area, prompting a barrage of abuse from the home fans. 78 min: Gael Givet gets booked for a foul on Chris Eagles. The free-kick is sent into the Blackburn box, where Pedersen is forced to concede a corner. 79 min: Eagles takes the corner and his delivery is awful, failing to beat Nzonzi at the near post. With the exception of David Dunn's penalty, the standard of dead ball delivery in this match has been embarrassingly bad. 81 min: Danny Fox sends rolls a marvellous low cross from the left wing that's just begging to be poked home by either Wade Elliott or Steven Fletcher, who between them contrive to miss the ball after it takes a nick off Samba. That was a glorious chance for Burnley to equalise. 82 min: "That shot that thwacked the bar," writes Mike Gibbons. "Me and my housemate are divided on whether it was a goal or not, even with a replay (I'm saying it looks more of a goal than Geoff Hurst's). Even if they did bring in video technology, which Allardyce is a big fan of and will be whining about later, it'd still be the judgement call of a human being at the end of it. I really don't think it's the cure for all ills it's made out to be." 85 min: Michel Salgado is stretchered off after a clash with David Nugent and replaced by Pascal Chimbonda. While Salgado was getting treated, they showed a couple more replays of "the shot that thwacked the bar". I can say with about 75% certainty that the while a good portion of the ball did cross the line, not all of it did. 87 min: "I don't seem to be able to find the Guardian's min-by-min coverage of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy," writes Stuart Bannerman. "Can you help please?" Er ... no. But I can reveal that I'll be back later with minute-by-minute coverage of Sunderland's magnificent victory over Liverpool, which kicks off at 4pm, if that's any help. 89 min: Burnley defender Michael Duff's name is announced over the Tannoy. Either his car is blocking somebody else's in the car-park or he's just been awarded the man of the match award. I'm plumping for the former because there's no way anyone in their right mind would give the celebratory fizz to a Burnley defender on the strength of their performances today. They've been comically inept. 90+1 min: There'll be five minutes of added time. 90+3 min: Danny Fox gets booked for a trip on Pascal Chimbonda. Rovers win a free-kick just inside the Burnley half. 90+4 min: "If the ball didn't cross the line, does that mean we'll be spared the usual tedious whining from Andy Gray, Alan Green et al about video replays that we get on each of the three or four times a year when they would make any difference?" asks Tom Hopkins. I don't know, Tom. Even if we are spared, I'm fairly sure Alan Green will something else to tediously whine about. 90+4 min: Martin Olsson tries to run down the clock by running out to the touchline and shielding the ball. He gets a kick from Mike Duff, who is shown a yellow card. Peep! Peep! Peep! Mike Dean ends the game. It hasn't been one of his better ones - I've lost count of the number of mistakes he's made. Blackburn's players celebrate like they've just won the FA Cup, having hammered another nail into the coffin of their East Lancashire neighbours. Burnley lie second from bottom of the table, three points behind West Ham and Hull City, having played one game more than the Tigers . They look well and truly doomed.
