The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights
Recorded on the Stripes's 2007 Canadian tour, this film/live album package comes in umpteen editions. The film is ace, but confining ourselves to the CD half of UGWNL is no sacrifice. The riveting mid-CD sequence – beginning with "The Union Forever", a haunted "Ball and Biscuit", mellowing into a singalong of "I Don't Know What To Do With Myself", then lurching into an Indian-Caledonian "Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn" – is a reminder of how electrifying this duo's brand of controlled abandon can be. But with a new Dead Weather album, imminent releases from Karen "Mrs White" Elson, Wanda Jackson (prod: J White) and rumour of White solo material, it leaves you dreading the prospect that the Stripes may have run out of road.
