Coalition Watch: deportations

Leaders of the coalition seemed to have different reactions to the decision by a tribunal that two Pakistani students were a threat to Britain's national security but could not be deported because of the risk that they would face torture or death. Nick Clegg, the Lib Dem deputy prime minister, appeared to defend the decision. "The law is very clear that it is wrong to deport people where there is risk that they will be seriously mistreated, tortured or even killed," he said. That appeared to be at least different in tone from the Tory home secretary, Theresa May, who said: "Protecting the public is the government's top priority. We are disappointed that the court has ruled that Abid Naseer and Ahmad Faraz Khan should not be deported."
