Is it true British Gas stamped out this payment method?

I have been helping my mother sort out her finances. I found £60 of British Gas stamps. BG says these are no longer usable, and all customers had received a leaflet about it. If my mum was of sound mind when she received it, she would have used the stamps. BC, Huddersfield No stamps were issued after September 2003 and British Gas stopped accepting them last year.
