World Cup 2010: Round of 16, day one

Hands up who wants to see an awesome game of soccer? The venue is Rustenburg and it's the Stars and Stripes v the Black Stars. Can Africa's last remaining participant beat the USA, whose confidence must be buoyed by the fact that they topped Group C ahead of England Photograph: Carl Recine/Action Images Photograph: Carl Recine/guardian.co.uk These guys are up for seeing a good game and also for having a good time Photograph: Ivan Sekretarev/AP Photograph: Ivan Sekretarev/guardian.co.uk It's an unbelievable start for the Black Stars as Kevin-Prince Boateng gets on the end of a knock down and sprints to the edge of the area before rifling home a shot that beats Tim Howard at the near post Photograph: Alessandra Tarantino/AP Photograph: Alessandra Tarantino/guardian.co.uk ... and then runs off in celebration Photograph: Themba Hadebe/AP Photograph: Themba Hadebe/guardian.co.uk Meanwhile, at the other end of the pitch, Ghana goalkeeper Richard Kingston gets some knee-sliding going as he celebrates Boateng's goal Photograph: Stuart Franklin/Getty Images Photograph: Stuart Franklin/guardian.co.uk Kingston had an extremely good game between the sticks, dealing admirably with everything that the USA threw at him. Here he comes out quickly to block a shot from Benny Feilhaber Photograph: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images Photograph: Kevork Djansezian/guardian.co.uk Jonathan Bornstein and Asamoah Gyan get up close and personal as they battle for a header Photograph: Alessandro Bianchi/Reuters Photograph: Alessandro Bianchi/guardian.co.uk They're 1-0 up at half-time and the Ghana team huddle for a team-talk before leaving the pitch and heading for the dressing room Photograph: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images Photograph: Kevork Djansezian/guardian.co.uk Boateng leaps high to intercept the ball before it gets to Landon Donovan Photograph: Ivan Sekretarev/AP Photograph: Ivan Sekretarev/guardian.co.uk The Americans have a chance to get back into the game on the hour when Clint Dempsey bursts into the area and Jonathan Mensah rashly dives in, but his timing is off and he brings down the American striker. It's a stonewall penalty and the referee points straight to the spot Photograph: Paul Gilham/FIFA via Getty Images Photograph: Paul Gilham/guardian.co.uk Landon Donovan steps up to take it but not before he takes a bit of time to compose himself and focus on the job in hand Photograph: Paul Gilham /FIFA via Getty Images Photograph: Paul Gilham /guardian.co.uk Eventually he is focused enough and takes a short run-up during which a bluff with his eyes sends Kingston the wrong way. The ball eventually nestles in the net after smacking against the upright Photograph: Stuart Franklin/Getty Images Photograph: Stuart Franklin/guardian.co.uk Both teams see chances to win it come and go before the 90 minutes are up. But it's still 1-1 – extra time beckons. Again it's a wonderful start for Ghana as after only three minutes Gyan gets on to the end of a ball over the top. As he chases it he gets a huge shove in the back from Carlos Bocanegra but rather than go down he displays his immense strength and carries on chasing the ball into the area Photograph: Jamie Squire/FIFA via Getty Images Photograph: Jamie Squire/guardian.co.uk ...where he leathers it and the power of the strike gives Tim Howard no chance. 2-1 to Ghana, the US will have to find some more of their "bouncebackibility" if they are to progress Photograph: Jeff Mitchell/FIFA via Getty Images Photograph: Jeff Mitchell/guardian.co.uk The US are still 2-1 down as the last few minutes arrive and desperate times call for desperate measures so Tim Howard comes up to challenge for a couple of corners and free kicks as the Americans give it one last push Photograph: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images Photograph: Kevork Djansezian/guardian.co.uk The final whistle goes. It's been an immense display by Ghana and their players, including Anthony Annan, Lee Addy, Asamoah Gyan and Sulley Muntari, who all deserve huge amounts of praise Photograph: Jonathan Brady/EPA Photograph: Jonathan Brady/guardian.co.uk John Pantsil looks shell-shocked as he celebrates Ghana's victory and tries to take in the enormity of the fact that they're off to Soccer City for the quarter-finals next weekend Photograph: Paul Gilham/FIFA via Getty Images Photograph: Paul Gilham/guardian.co.uk Earlier in the day at Port Elizabeth, Uruguay took on South Korea, with the Koreans attempting to repeat their feat of the 2002 finals where they reached the semi-finals Photograph: Lee Smith/Action Images Photograph: Lee Smith/guardian.co.uk Uruguay's Diego Lugano, left, remonstrates with South Korea's Lee Chung-yong Photograph: Paul Thomas/Action Images Photograph: Paul Thomas/guardian.co.uk ... and this is the perspective that Lee would have had Photograph: Oliver Weiken/EPA Photograph: Oliver Weiken/guardian.co.uk It's a great start for Uruguay when some sloppy defending lets in Luis Suarez after just eight minutes. Suarez has all the time in the world to slot the ball into the empty net from a tight angle after being left unmarked at the back post. 1-0 Photograph: Alex Livesey /FIFA via Getty Images Photograph: Alex Livesey /guardian.co.uk ... He then celebrates in style, with Edinson Cavani Photograph: Alex Livesey/FIFA via Getty Images Photograph: Alex Livesey/guardian.co.uk Hands up who thinks that this Jabulani football is rubbish Photograph: Roberto Candia/AP Photograph: Roberto Candia/guardian.co.uk After starting the day bathed in beautiful sunshine, the weather turns a little more British Photograph: Schalk van Zuydam/AP Photograph: Schalk van Zuydam/guardian.co.uk Coming up to midway through the second half, South Korea equalise a good header by Lee. It's now 1-1 Photograph: Lars Baron/Getty Images Photograph: Lars Baron/guardian.co.uk With 10 minutes to go, Suarez regains the lead for Uruguay with an asolutely fabulous goal. He received the ball well outside the area and then in the blink of an eye cut inside and curled an unstoppable shot towards the top right-hand corner, the ball going in off the post Photograph: Roberto Candia/AP Photograph: Roberto Candia/guardian.co.uk Jung Sung-ryong can only watch the ball as he dives in vain after Suarez's fantastic shot Photograph: Laurence Griffiths/Getty Images Photograph: Laurence Griffiths/guardian.co.uk Diego Forlan celebrates Suarez's goal Photograph: Paul Hanna/Reuters Photograph: Paul Hanna/guardian.co.uk Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera punches the ball clear Photograph: LIU JIN/AFP/Getty Images Photograph: LIU JIN/guardian.co.uk The emotion of it all gets to South Korea's Cha Do-ri as he cries after the final whistle Photograph: Carl De Souza/AFP/Getty Images Photograph: Carl De Souza/guardian.co.uk It's all too much for this South Korea fan too Photograph: Carl De Souza/AFP/Getty Images Photograph: Carl De Souza/guardian.co.uk These Uruguay fans are going to be celebrating long into the night.
