New York Jazz Repertory Orchestra: Le Jazz Hot
The idea behind this nine-part suite is to recreate the frisson caused by the arrival of jazz in 1920s Paris. It is composed by Bill Warfield, the orchestra's leader, drawing on themes by Milhaud, Poulenc and Sidney Bechet, and features saxophonist Dave Liebman. Warfield does not try to create a period atmosphere, emphasising instead tones and textures - the elements in jazz which first fascinated European composers. Liebman plays beautifully.
