Support Kirkgate Market petition now online

A petition calling for more investment and support of Leeds' Kirkgate Market can now be signed online. Thousands of people have already signed a paper petition which is being circulated at different traders' stalls in the market. But the Friends of Kirkgate Market group has teamed up with campaigning website 38 degrees to put their petition online for shoppers to sign. It can be found by clicking here . The petition asks the council to: * Significantly reduce market traders' rents - agreed in consultation with traders * Agree to substantial investment over the next five years, including full repairs to the roof of the whole market * Ensure involvement of traders and greater transparency in all aspects of market management, starting with traders having a say in the recruitment and appointment of a new market manager. A spokesperson for the Friends said on their blog: "So far thousands have signed the petition at the Market which can be found at many stalls but if you cannot get to the Market you can now support the Market and market traders through this online petition. The campaign is already having an impact. The new Labour administration in place in Leeds City Council is starting to think how will they make a difference to the Market. We have heard good signs so far but thousands of signatures will surely have an effect in shaping new policy decisions." The friends are holding a campaign meeting at 6pm this evening in O'Neill's Pub, in Great George Street. Members of the public are welcome to attend. Meanwhile, an independent market website put together by Tony Crooks from leedsnet has been launched. Traders list their goods and shoppers can order online at www.leedskirkgatemarket.co.uk .
