News International appoints Barnaby Dawe marketing director

News International has appointed Barnaby Dawe, the former Heart FM and BSkyB senior executive, as the marketing director for the Sun and News of the World with responsibility for a £15m annual advertising budget. Dawe is currently the vice-president of marketing and communications at Turner Broadcasting, the parent of channels including Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Nuts TV. He will join Rupert Murdoch's company in April. "Barnaby has worked on some of the industry's most popular brands and has an extensive background in media marketing," said Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of News International. "I am delighted that he will be bringing this wealth of experience to his new role." Dawe joined Turner Broadcasting in July 2008 after leaving his role as managing director of Heart FM in 2007, having seen the station knock Capital Radio off the top breakfast slot in London for the first time in 30 years. Prior to working at Heart FM, Dawe was BSkyB's director of marketing from 2000 until 2005, responsible for major programme launches including 24 and Nip/Tuck. Before that he was in marketing at Channel 4, working on launches including Sex and the City. Dawe takes up the position previously held by Roland Agambar, who defected to rival Associated Newspapers to take the role of chief marketing officer in January last year . The Sun and News of the World spent £15m on advertising in the year to the end of October, according to The Nielsen Company. Rob Painter, who has held the role of interim marketing director since October, will take up the new position of News International portfolio, strategy and planning director. • To contact the MediaGuardian news desk email [email protected] or phone 020 3353 3857.
