World Cup 2010: Germany's Mesut Ozil questions England's commitment
Germany's Mesut Ozil has spoken out in praise of the Premier League but questioned the England team's commitment to the World Cup, as his side prepare for their semi-final against Spain tomorrow. "If you find the greatest tournament on earth boring, then you probably shouldn't be there," he told BBC's Match of the Day magazine, on England's complaints about training. "I've been having a great time here and have cherished every second I've played at the World Cup." • Follow the Guardian's World Cup team on Twitter • Sign up to play our daily Fantasy Football game • Stats centre: Get the lowdown on every player • The latest semi-final news, features and more The midfielder, however, admired the national side's domestic league, hinting that he may have plans away from Werder Bremen: "The Premiership is a great league and teams like Chelsea and Man United are very strong. While the World Cup is on, I won't think about my future – but La Liga and the Premiership have teams where you can win the best trophies." Ozil rates the World Cup match with England highly, as much for the message it sent out as anything else. "Beating England 4-1 has to be my highlight because it showed that, despite what people may say or write, Germany is still one of the best footballing nations in the world." The final result of the game was, nonetheless, never in doubt, despite the Frank Lampard goal, concluded the German: "If the ref doesn't see it, he can't give it – but clearly it was a goal. It was disappointing for England, but I don't think it would have changed the outcome of the match. We were the better team and would have still won."
