Ecclestone plans to take F1 to New York and Russia

Some of Europe's grands prix may be dropped in favour of races in New York and Russia, according to Formula One's rights holder, Bernie Ecclestone. The sport's impresario is considering introducing a street race in New Jersey in 2012 and recently revealed he is keen to see one in Russia too, it was reported today. Ecclestone said there were three potential sites for the race outside Manhattan, while Moscow or the resort city Sochi, site of the next Winter Olympics, were the possible venues for Russia. "We'll make a decision [about locations] in the next couple of months," he said, according to ESPN. Ecclestone is keen to expand the calendar from its current 19 events to 20 or more but some of Formula One's established European races, such as those at Valencia and Barcelona, could be dropped. "We're going to lose some races, for sure. There are some races we can afford to lose without too much problem," he said. "I've spoken to the countries to see what we can come up with."
