Murali Kartik's first wickets put Somerset back in the game
The game advanced at a good pace in sublime conditions. It is just possible that declarations may not be required. A 10-wicket haul on a day at Taunton represents substantial progress. Somerset are relieved to be back in the game. At one point on the first day Yorkshire were 251 for one so it was some achievement to dismiss them for 405 just after lunch – and that included a doughty last-wicket stand of 36 between Oliver Hannon-Dalby and David Wainwright. There was a concerted appeal for a bat-pad catch but there is no suggestion that this Wainwright is a walker. Murali Kartik took his first three wickets for Somerset and there is no doubt that he will have many opportunities to take more. He will be a busy man, especially on this type of surface. Jonathan Bairstow was caught at short-extra cover and then Kartik dealt with the tail including the wonderfully exuberant Tino Best, who smashed a six and a four before being duped by the arm ball. The Best-Trescothick duel was equally mesmerising. Tino Best hurtled in; Marcus Trescothick, surviving the odd lbw appeal, belted boundaries. However, Trescothick could not survive Hannon-Dalby's spell. He was palpably lbw playing around his front pad. Nick Compton edged Steven Patterson to the keeper before Somerset rallied through the calm strokeplay of Arul Suppiah. In the final session there were two wickets for Adil Rashid, which is encouraging, yet his 10 overs in the evening sunshine could not dispel concerns about his development. He duped Zander de Bruyn with his googly and was gifted a wicket by James Hildreth, who has been in sublime form recently. In between the remodelled action looked tentative and untrustworthy. More bowling is required for Rashid. On this track, offering a little turn, more bowling is available.
