New government: today's front pages
The Sun is firmly in the human-interest school. Tom Newton Dunn's picture-caption style intro begins: 'DAVID Cameron gives pregnant wife Samatha a loving pat on her baby bump as they enter 10 Downing Street last night...' Photograph: The Sun Sun readers in Scotland are given a slightly less partisan main headline - and a secondary picture of the Browns Photograph: The Sun The Daily Mail, too, goes for the pat on the bump, in an unusually picture-led front page. The story at the bottom has expanded, however, for this third edition Photograph: Daily Mail The Daily Telegraph goes for the broadsheet 'new prime minister waving' approach, but indulges in what may be the largest front-page headline type it has ever used Photograph: Daily Telegraph The Guardian goes with the wave... Photograph: The Guardian ...and, in later editions after the Lib Dems had formalised their coalition role, becomes the only paper to put Nick Clegg in its main headline Photograph: The Guardian The Daily Express goes for a compromise position - waving, pregnancy pun Photograph: Daily Express The Times, on the other hand, goes for both pregnancy picture and pun Photograph: The Times The Independent has a wave and a spin on Cameron's 'broken Britain' slogan Photograph: The Independent The FT, using a much wider and less punchy photograph than its rivals, betrays just a hint of impatience in its headline Photograph: Financial Times Like the Guardian, it changed the headline on later editions to reflect the coalition agreement Photograph: Financial Times The Daily Star is the only paper with neither bump nor wave, just a relieved headline referring back to yesterday's 'SORT IT OUT YOU CLOWNS' Photograph: Daily Star The Daily Mirror, loyal to the last, gives the departing Browns pride of place Photograph: Daily Mirror Cameron won the picture slot and the lead story (that right-hand single column) in the New York Times Photograph: New York Times The embrace also charmed Spain's El Pais Photograph: El Pais Cameron was also big news in Canada's national papers - the Globe and Mail as well as the National Post, pictured - but they had a more spectacular photograph on offer Photograph: National Post
