Kyle Hogg the hero as Lancashire hold on for draw against Yorkshire

The tensest climax to a Roses match for many years ended in frustration for Yorkshire as Lancashire's eighth-wicket pair, Steven Croft and Kyle Hogg, survived for half an hour with seven fielders crowded round the bat to salvage a draw. They had come together in the 52nd over when Adil Rashid lured Lancashire's captain, Glen Chapple, into a chip to mid-on, giving the leg-spinner his ninth wicket of a match in which he and his teenage off-spin partner, Azeem Rafiq, underlined their mouthwatering promise. But for the second time in the match Hogg, who had scored a career-best 88 in the first innings, showed a more effective combination of technique and temperament than Lancashire's established batsmen, although this time Croft was a notable exception. The all-rounder from Blackpool, who has bounced back impressively from a poor 2009, had been in since the ninth over, when Tino Best took the third wicket of an exuberant opening spell, and ended with an unbeaten 85 from 175 balls – drawing nods of approval from the few hundred hardy souls scattered around the ground on a gloomy evening, who would not have had much faith in numbers 10 and 11, Daren Powell and Simon Kerrigan, to last for long. Lancashire were also helped by the Manchester rain, which forced a 35-minute stoppage when they seemed reasonably comfortable at 106 for four soon after tea. Shortly after the resumption Rashid, who had been surprisingly held back from Yorkshire's attack by the acting captain, Jacques Rudolph, until the 24th over, had Tom Smith caught behind and Luke Sutton gloving a googly in the space of three balls to put the fat firmly back in the fire. But in the end Yorkshire ran out of time. The draw still lifts them to the top of the First Division table, but only a point above Nottinghamshire who have two games in hand. Lancashire remain a further seven behind, having played one game more than Notts and one fewer than Yorkshire, and are now unbeaten for 18 Championship games going back to last June. One small consolation for Rudolph was the end of an unwanted 100% record – in his seven previous games leading Yorkshire, two of them in the Championship and five in various one-day competitions, the South African had not avoided defeat.
